Directory
Management
One of the building blocks of
a comprehensive Search Engine Optimization strategy, directory
management is something that we do fairly early in the web
site development process. In order to get the biggest bang
for your buck (to get found quicker) you must be in certain
directories. The most common of these major directories are
DMOZ, Yahoo and Business.com and then to a slightly lesser
extent JoeAnt and Best of the Web (BOTW).
You will find some companies
touting submissions to more than 1,000 directories for $80.
This is like achieving a #1 ranking on a search engine that
gets less than 1/10 of 1% of the total search engine
traffic. If a listing in these minor directories stands no
chance in driving traffic to your site or improving your
rankings on the big three search engines it is really a
waste of time and money (no matter what the cost)!
Directory submission is also
considered part of the
link building
strategy as you are basically getting a string
inbound link from these high value directories.
While the submission to major
general directories is considered a basic link building
technique digging a bit deeper in niche specific directories
takes a bit more doing. These directories may not be quite
as powerful as the general directories are but they still
pack a potent punch as they are one way links into your site
from "good neighborhoods" of related content. The search
engines tend to place value on links coming from these niche
specific sources.
We believe in taking our time
and doing manual directory submissions get you the most
impact. While this is important in the grand scheme of a
well round internet marketing strategy this is only one
small piece of the equation.
For our
Local Small Business
clients we have a decidedly different approach as local SEO
efforts dictate a local directory game plan geared towards
finding success in specific city, state or regional market
and their immediate surrounding areas. |
