Submission
There are several types of
sitemaps and each plays a significant role on any well
established website. The one most folks are aware of is a
basic user friendly static version that is typically found
from a link on the bottom navigation or footer of most
websites. This static
site map is geared towards the site visitor to help guide
them to relevant pages that they may be searching for. The
search engine robots (also called bots or spiders) may also
crawl this page but it is not the Best Practices procedure
to get this info to the search engines.
Best Practice is to follow the
protocol established by
Sitemaps.org
and is used by the big three search engines. This calls for
the webmaster to create an XML sitemap. The webmaster will
also make sure that the sitemap information is located in
the Robots.txt file which tells the search engines robots
not only where every single page on the website is "located"
but also how often this website content is updated.
We have several XML sitemap
generator tools that we use for this purpose and these work
well for us to submit the XML sitemap to Google Webmaster
Tools, Yahoo Site Explorer and MSN Webmaster Central.
This procedure works well in
conjunction with our
internal links strategy as a way to help guide the
robots to our most important pages. This is also part of our
overall website
design protocol and is one more tool for us to have
at our disposal.
